Brent’s T.V. was formed by Chris Imlay and John Denery in 1988 under the original name of Brents T.V. And Appliances. Sounding like a pop punk version of the Everly Brothers the band set forth on a West Coast tour of only playing Laundromats. The tour started in Arcata and continued through every Laundromat in every town up to Crescent City. John Denery says: This seemed like an obvious, best thing to do. Laundromats were always open, all ages could go, it had a wall socket and a built in audience. Plus clubs were too big for us, but we could fill a Laundromat. The first one went well enough that we started doing them more often which inspired the song ‘Laundromat’. Our friends would bring their laundry to our shows while we played”. That tour included one non-Laundromat attempt to play underneath the giant Paul Bunyan statue in Klamath – which is where the photos on the Lumberjack Days single were taken. The 7-track single ‘Lumberjack Days’ was the follow up to a self recorded tape that had circulated from the band of a live set at a party. The record introduced the ultra excitable hip swinging sounds that was unlike any other band on Lookout Records so far, incorporating a style reminiscent of rock n roll chipmunks working the railroad lines on the chain gang singing jaunty skiffle tunes. The sound was however an exciting fresh take on a scene that was at the current time open to anything. One thing that Brents T.V. had in abundance that was captured on the ‘Lumberjack Days’ records was energy, although this also was lost on some people, especially Maximum Rock N Roll, who were unsure at what speed to even play the 7” due to the overly excitable vocals. John Denery remembers: “Someone described us as The Kingston Trio trying to do Ramones songs. Acoustic guitars, a banjo, stand up drummer who used a kettle and a bike horn”. Soon after the release of Lumberjack Days the band split and reformed briefly under the name The Dukes Of Burl before settling on the name the Ne’er Do Wells and releasing a six song EP on Lookout Records before also splitting. Chris and John went on to play in the successful band the Hi-Fives, who released a slew of singles and three full length albums in the mid to late 1990s.
