Winterkat were a hard rock/pomp rock band formed in San Antonio, Texas in 1982. The group rose from the ashes of Liquid Sky, a band that featured guitarist Jonathan Grell as well as vocalist Steve Cooper who later would sing for the Texas act S.A. Slayer. Liquid Sky appeared on the 99.5 Kiss Homegrown radio station compilation LP in 1981. When they broke up Grell formed Winterkat with vocalist Ric Swanson, drummer Gerado Ramirez and bassist Dean Vallecillo, the latter pair both being ex-Heyoka members. 983 saw the band release a self-titled five song mini album on their own Winterkat Records label. The band would go through several line-up changes, among them loosing original vocalist Ric Swanson who went on to form AOR band Nightwork in 1985. Another mini album, The Struggle, was issued in 1986. The band struggled on until the early 90 but by then the bands key players had moved on to other projects. Grell founded Suite 16 and then Dirty Water with Riot vocalist Rhett Forrester but the project fell apart when Forrester was tragically murdered in 1994. After that he went on and joined the Southern Rock group Mudpie, releasing a self-titled album in 2002. This 2022 cd release features the iconic debut album as well as the Liquid Sky track from the 1981 compilation with Steve Cooper on vocals.
