The Leyton Buzzards a.k.a. The Buzzards took their name from their home town of Leyton, an area of east London. They were initially a pub rock band, but soon adapted to punk rock/new wave and their debut single, 19 And Mad, saw the light of day in 1977. Anyone into UK punk should check that one out as it is an excellent 3 tracker. They entered and won the thoroughly unpunk Sun Newspaper And Radio 1 Band Of Hope And Glory Contest in 1979. It gained them a contract with record major Chrysalis and their first single after this win, Saturday Night (Beneath the Plastic Palm Trees, was the track that would put them into the history books as it was a minor hit when it reached No 53 in the charts and a spot on Top Of The Pops. It was also Tony Parsons single of the week in the NME 3/3/79. The music had changed and punk lovers will most likely prefer the B-side, Through With You, with is more in the old style of the band. After this the band would continue to evolve the wrong way. The shortened their name to Buzzards before going back to Leyton Buzzard on their last single. Probably some desperation trying to bring back the old fans. But they split in 1980 and started the act Modern Romance, a part of the bands history old fans think is best forgotten.
