The seventh full-length record from France’s Blut Aus Nord is supposed to demonstrate more traditional black metal songwriting and song structuring. But if 2009’s curiously-entitled Memoria Vetusta II — Dialogue With The Stars is traditional, then one has to wonder what the French avant-garde black metal trio’s nontraditional stuff sounds like! Upon your first listen, it appears that this album is just a noisy, adrenalized excuse to put your neck in a brace. But with closer inspection, it becomes clear that Dialogue is an extremely dense and meticulously-well-textured record with multiple layers that reveal themselves only after several, attentive repeat listens. Sure, its most brutal moments definitely rival anything put out by Norway’s finest black metal gods; but there are multiple experimentally progressive and musically atmospheric touches woven into the mix, throughout, here, as well. This is an amazing album that challenges most people’s preconceptions about black metal. If you like black metal that are unique then you will find this album as perfect as an album can get.
