Samson was one of the forerunners of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene and would become famous for featuring singer Bruce Bruce (later Dickinson) who later became lead vocalist for Iron Maiden. The band had some amazing musicians during their years. Besides Bruce they also had Clive Burr (also later with Iron Maiden), John McCoy (Gillan), Dave Bucket Colwell (Bad Company) Pete Jupp (FM) and Merv Goldsworthy (FM). They also made a fuzz in the early years because they had an iconic drummer in Barry Graham Purkis (more commonly known as Thunderstick) as he was performing in a ghoulish mask and were playing inside of a locked cage on stage. Even if the names on some of the band members involved are impressing none of them are actually the band leader. Samson was formed and lead by guitarist (and vocalist) Paul Samson who formed the band back in 1977. The band fell apart in 2002, and rightly so, following the death of Paul Samson. This double album features material from three studio albums Joint Forces 1986, the AOR sounding Refugee 1990 album with Peter Scallan on vocals, the bluesier self titled Samson album from 1993 as well as the rare Dont Tell Me Its Over that were recorded during the Refugee album session but didnt make it onto the original album and wouldnt see the light of the day until it was added as bonus track on later cd re-issues. There are also lots of live material pulled from the Thank You And Goodnight album, that were recorded during their European tour in 1984. More live material comes from Marquee in 1986 when Paul is performing with Paul Samsons Empire where he has Kev Skids Riddles from Angelwitch on bass and Mark Brabbs from Tank on drums. So listening to a compilation album with Samson means youre going through the cream of the crop of British heavy metal musicians performing some fine 80s metal music.
