1985 was a speed metal year. Furious debut albums from Agent Steel, Savage Grace, Abattoir, ADX, Whiplash, Exodus and Megadeth are proofs. It was a hellish year! The time when speed metal was a sin in its purity! The time when the word speed metal was justified and one of the shapers were Bloodlust, a band from California, which at the time was the throne of (quality) speed metal. Sounding raw, punishing, merciless and indestructive. Bloodlust were no exception. If you like bands as Abattoir, Savage Grace, Agent Steel and you wanna widespread your spectrum with more unknown and underground bands, then Bloodlust are your deal. Their debut album ‘Guilty Of Sin’ has all necessary ingredients, album length, right amount of melody, sharp guitars, thundering drums, raven screamer, typical lyrics and even slightly bad production, but for Bloodlust I’m counting this also as a good thing because it makes them even more raw and powerful, similar as Venom. So much fast metal, unstoppable velocity, furious music on a very short album, not reaching even 30 minutes in whole. The first song with a very exhausted title ‘Soldier of fortune’ sounds like Exciter tune, presence of their elements are sprayed all over this song! The whole structure, verses, chorus, solos, passage after solo, even the sound comes close to that of Exciter. Well done. Songs ‘Ride to death’ and ‘Too scared to run’ are in the vein of Omen, with heavier but slower pace. ‘Bleeding for you’ has the only really weak mark and it is the beginning riff, which is borrowed from Agent Steel’s song 144.000 Gone, especially with the same rhythm part (exact same bass and drum part) it doesn’t sound much different! On the production part: bass guitar is very audible, sometimes there’s a whola lotta noise from drums and guitars, but for this kind of music I don’t really care about the sound perfection. It is pounding metal, played by heavy metal maniacs. No obligations, just releasing your inner demons free, with a fury. And we know what Metal Blade stands for, therefore the production as it is, stands for a reason, it’s 80’s metal, not 90’s or later polishing paste. After this album the band split with vocalist Guy Lord and drummer Craig Kasin. In stepped drummer Mark E Guestas and ex-Abattoir vocalist Steve Gaines. The band would return with the ‘Terminal Velocity’ mini album in 1988. For all nostalgic, 80’s American speed metal fanatics.
