Vixen released their third album Tangerine 8 years after Rev It Up in 1998. The music scene had changed and Vixen had to change with it. Jan and Share left the band and Janet Gardner and Roxy Petrucci were joined by newcomer Gina Stile on guitar. Tangerine is an alternative hard rock album with a grunge flair to it. Janet still has The Voice and Roxy is the best drummer ever (although, how many people know that that’s her on the clarinet on the the untitled hidden bonus track?). Fans of the bands two hair/glam metal album might think the band changed too much but they just had to. None of the glam metal bands were making music like their heyday (Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, Skid Row, Dokken, Def Leppard etc) all those bands changed their sound in the 90s. The band shows some heavy riffing guitars (Tangerine, Barely Breathin, Never Say Never) or raw and dark, like on Page. Tangerine wont beat the first 2 albums but its worth owning and shows a band filled with new musical influences creating great musical diversity with a new attitude. For those that only know Vixen from their earliest albums, give them a second listen. Modern, yet classic.
