Night Cloud from Savona, Italy sit at the very high end of technical precision prog which will appeal directly to scholars of the mighty Dream Theater (of course!), Symphony X, Vanden Plan and a passing nod to Rush along the way. Listening to a technical progressive album isn’t always easy as its never that straight forward and to the uninitiated can seem that bit too demanding. However this is a simply stunning piece of work that involves you from start to finish. Fortunately the music on offer isn’t too heavy or demanding on the ear and each song sweeps and glides along creating sound textures that are very organic, natural and spontaneous. As you’d expect the majority of the playing is exemplary in particular the guitars of Daniele Ferro and Massimiliano Seghesio and the vocals of Daniele Baglietto are spot on driving the songs when required and also guiding them when Night Cloud is taking a breather. The sheer scope of sounds and shades prevailing through the music is bewildering as it is enchanting and it never gets boring. Production is handled by one Dario Mollo a busy man in Italian Rock and Metal and exceptionally well produced it is. Some albums just grab you on first play and ‘Defeated By The Innocents’ is one such album. Progressive Rock fans will possibly hail this as good as anything recorded by the genres big guns and rightly so. Absolutely first class.
