Description
Limited digipack with one bonus track Melodic metal supergroup Masterplan returned with their fourth album Time To Be King in 2010, and obviously the buzz around its release had a lot to do with the return of original vocalist Jorn Lande. Obviously I'm a total Jorn fan, but I have to say I was a bit bummed when Mike DiMeo left as I thought Mk II was Masterplan's strongest album overall, and wasn't sure if the band could recreate that same energy. Time To Be King sounds a lot like a Jorn solo album. I'm not sure if that's because Jorn wrote most of the lyrics, but just about all of the songs on this album sound like Jorn songs. I don't get much in the way of a uniquely Masterplan sound here, which is something the band's first three albums definitely had. Of course, I love Jorn's solo albums so I can't complain too much. Besides, the musicianship is pretty terrific (it's always good to hear Roland Grapow cut loose) and Jorn's vocals sound incredible as always. It may not be Masterplan's best work, but Time To Be King is still a very good melodic metal album that should appeal to fans of the band's earlier albums as well as fans of high quality melodic metal along the lines of Pretty Maids, Starbreaker, At Vance and of course Jorn.
