It doesnt say promotional copy anywhere but the promo versions at the time came with white Atlantic labels while the copies that went for sale at record stores had the normal red and black label While it wouldnt seem far-fetched to believe that Ronnie James Dio just sort of appeared from another dimension as a fully formed heavy metal god, the iconic frontman who once stood at the vanguard of bands like Black Sabbath and Rainbow had been recording music for almost 20 years before he would become a household name in heavy metal circles. This mega rare single from 1962 is with Ronnie Dio And The Prophets an act with whom Ronnie James Dio recorded throughout most of the 60s. Its almost hard to believe that the metal voice who would eventually bring us Holy Diver here takes us through bubblegum popsters like Love Pains and The Ooh-poo-pah-doo. Unsurprisingly, the songs work pretty well, and while it's a bit strange hearing a voice that's distinctly Dio belting his way through 60s pop songs, it's clear that he was always destined for success.
