Blue Tears was another in a long list of hard rock/hair metal bands that got lost in the shuffle during the late 80s and early 90s. For some reason, MCA Records seemed to sign this kind of band left and right, release one album, fail to promote it, and then cut them loose. A lot of bands fell by the wayside as a result. Some were really good and some were merely average. Blue Tears definitely falls into the first category. The sound on the bands 1990 self-titled debut was equal parts Bon Jovi and Night Ranger. They may not have been the most original band on the block, playing the kind of slick melodic AOR that was so popular at the time, but Blue Tears played it very well. Each song on the album is well written, though they don't stray very far from the standard AOR love songs. Perhaps the band was too clean for their own good. Bands like Poison and Warrant were milking the whole bad boys with a soft side approach to great success. Blue Tears weren't bad boys with a soft side. They came across as nice guys making safe music. Then again, Journey and Bad English were never seen as bad boys, and they did just fine. This is a band that really should have been a big hit at the time, but for whatever reason went largely unnoticed. Overall, Blue Tears is a great album from start to finish.
