Ennio Morricone (b. 1928, Rome) pursued traditional musical studies but also played in jazz bands. When he graduated form the Conservatory, he took an arranging job at Italian Radio (RAI) to support himself but had no thought of becoming a film composer until he saw The Robe (1953), the first CinemaScope film, which had a powerful score by Alfred Newman. He began working as an orchestrator, and soon began receiving credits as a composer. In common with only a few other film composers, he generally orchestrates his own music. He was just becoming known in Italian film circles when another up-and-comer, director Sergio Leone, decided to make westerns. A new generation of filmmakers, who had grown up admiring the American Western film, suddenly started making westerns in Germany (notably the Winnetou series), but when the genre hit Italy, the term spaghetti Western was born. Morricone was recommended to Leone by his distributor. When the two met they realized they had been classmates in grammar school, and an important film partnership was born. On this double album we find The Ray Hamilton Orchestra and Massimo Farao Trio perform 36 of Morricones movie scores both before, after and from the Spaghetti Western era
