The deeply idiosyncratic The Life And Times of Judge Roy Bean remains one of Maurice Jarre’s most ambitious ventures into the Western genre — forged from classicist melodies, atmospheric arrangements and eccentric instrumentation, the music channels influences from mariachi to honky tonk to conjure a wry, knowing evocation of weird-beard Americana. “Judge Roy Bean’s Theme” immediately establishes the score’s complex pastiche of romance, nostalgia and violence, all brought to life in typical Jarre fashion — not everything here works, and sometimes the composer’s reach exceeds his grasp, but the music’s structural complexity and tactile presence are undeniably impressive.
