Description

Sam Hopkins was a Texas country bluesman of the highest caliber whose career began in the 1920s and stretched all the way into the 1980s. Along the way, Hopkins watched the genre change remarkably, but he never appreciably altered his mournful Lone Star sound, which translated onto both acoustic and electric guitar. Hopkins’ nimble dexterity made intricate boogie riffs seem easy, and his fascinating penchant for improvising lyrics to fit whatever situation might arise made him a beloved blues troubadour. The Texas Bluesman is a fine introduction to Hopkins electric blues material. The album features material from 4 recording sessions done between 1961 and 1967. Track 1 to 9 were recorded in Los Angeles on the 4th and 5th of October 1965. Track 10 in Berkley on the 2nd of December 1961 while track 11 also recorded in Berkley were laid down on the 26th of November that same year. The last six tracks were recorded in Houston, Texas on the 18th of December 1967.
