Description

Paradise Lost ninth album have been called by some as a ‘return to form’ album, although in my opinion this great band never left in the first place. I think it’s a great album, not only for its listenability and top-notch production, but for the fact that the band continues to progress through experimentation without sacrificing their trademark dark edge. The guitar sound is more satisfyingly thick throughout than it has been since ‘Draconian Times’ (1995) It’s also great to hear real live drums making an impression and standing out again in the music. The drum machines of the previous three albums made for some truly excellent dark songs, but it was a shame to have a good drummer like Lee Morris in the background instead of the forefront. I do think that this is the best Paradise Lost album since ‘One Second’ with its blend of heavy guitars, industrial elements, and atmospheric keyboards, I see nothing wrong with this album. Nick Holmes is also experimenting with his voice even more. While he has used his clean voice exclusively in these past years, he now uses his clean voice coupled with some rougher singing as well as a growl or two. Not many, but they do exist. I find that this album is catchier and much more satisfying than the last couple releases. It relies more on a rockin’ industrial vibe. The melody is still there, though, and they work quite well together.
