Very rare original Finnish 1991 press on ComeBack Records with printed innersleeve

One of the first, if not the very first, groups to be part of what would become the country’s legendary and world-renowned death metal scene, Finland’s Xysma formed in 1988 in the city of Turku. After a year or so spent honing their craft, it was time to get their sound captured on tape once and for all, and this they did, on April 1st, 1989, when they recorded the now-legendary Swarming Of The Maggots demo. In truth, this was more of a grind/noise offering in the vein of Reek Of Putrefaction-era Carcass or Disgrace To The Corpse Of Sid-era Sore Throat, but proved to be a brilliant start nonetheless, and the tape went on to become a widely-circulated cult favorite in the international underground at the time. After making such waves all over the world with their initial demo, Xysma’s next recordings were the Above The Mind Of Morbidity 12″ (1990) and the Fata Morgana 7” (1990). The following year. After that the Fins made the trek all the way to Stockholm, Sweden’s famed Sunlight Studios, to record their debut full-length, Yeah. On this release, the recording quality is vastly improved, and the group themselves had never been in finer form. Teppo’s snare drum sound is very sick and very powerful on this album, and yet what this record really introduced to the world, was a brand new style of death metal altogether. Apparently, in the interim since the earlier releases, the band had discovered and completely immersed themselves in the world of ’70s rock/heavy metal, most notably Black Sabbath. Thus, what you get here is the usual Xysma brutal, grinding death metal onslaught, but accented with some very melodic and brilliant 70s-style riffs. This sound would later get the tag death ‘n’ roll, that other Finnish bands like Convulse, Sentenced and Amorphis would also eventually try their hand at. So, as usual, Xysma were always true innovators, and never followers, throughout their career.
