With the lack of makeup and vastly different set list from just three years earlier the band’s identity had changed drastically. The Lick It Up Tour featured classic songs like Black Diamond, Cold Gin, Detroit Rock City, Firehouse, Love Gun, Strutter and the obligatory Rock and Roll All Nite in the set. But the band also started performing a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love and this was the first time, since 1973, that the band had performed a non-album cover during their set. In some ways the Lick It Up Tour was simply a repeat of the previous tour, sans make-up. The battle-tank drum riser and staging was recycled, which particularly for the European market made sense since they’d not seen the show previously. Simple walls of amplifiers were placed to either side with the tank-treads remaining in use on either side of the stage. The lighted Kiss logo remained the primary background object. While pyro was limited for much of the tour, the sparkling-wall of flame effect was still used. Pyro was also limited throughout the show, replaced with non-stop high-energy movement of the band members. It’s hardly surprising that the song tempos increased. The European adventure visited many of the venues the band had appeared at in 1980 but the band had a hard time selling out the venues. This album features the show the band did at Stadhalle in Vienna, Austria on the 8th of November 1983 and not even 30% of the tickets had been sold, playing in front of just less than 3000 people in an arena that can take 10 000. So when the European tour was over and the band headed back to New York it was obvious that even with the new gimmick of performing without makeup could resurrect the band’s fortunes and former glories and the band were able to reach the sort of level that was required to keep the business on track.
