Description
An almost legendary Stockholm black metal act. Frontman Dead would later come to prominence with Mayhem and become an infamous black metal martyr after his apparent suicide. Morbid, forged during 1986 by bass player Slator. Formative Morbid members included Dead, guitarists TG and Klacke. Morbid, having recruited 16 year old guitarist Ulf Cederlund, first attracted attention with the 1987 demo 'December Moon', recorded over just 16 hours at Heavy Loads Thunderload studio. The band line-up for that demo was Dead (Per Yngve Ohlin) on vocals, guitarists Napoleon Pukes (Ulf Cederlund) and John Berger (a.k.a. John Lennart), Der. Shitz (Jens Nasstrom) and Drutten (Lars-Goran Petrov). Morbid fractured as John Lennart and Dead opted out and the new version of Morbid recorded their second demo Last Supper in September 1988 at Sunlight Studio by Tomas Skogsberg. This split includes the two first demos together with seven live tracks and the first and only demo with Norweigan death metal act Mortem. Mortem where Marius Vold on vocals, Steinar Johnsen on guitars and Hellhammer on drums. All three members were also starting up Arcuturs at the same time they had Mortem. The Slow Death demo features some very raw and violent sounding death metal. Even if the members would go on to offer their talents in such diversely musical groups as the progressive and avant-garde Arcturus and the folk-black metal of Satyricon this shows the roots where they came from. This is simplistic blackened-death metal, with speeds ranging from mid-paced to all out blasting. Production-wise, the recording isn't too bad for a demo; it sounds like it was recorded in a dungeon but the guitar and drums can be heard rather well, that is until the vocals kick in, and here's where a good amount of this demo's power lies. The vocals are absolutely insane – a hellish, frantic howling drenched in distortion and reverb that almost totally drowns out the other instruments. Some may find these maniacal shrieks to be annoying and too over the top, but personally, I think they give this demo a sound, style, and intensity that few can match.
