Description

Us pressed music cassette. Purple cassette with black text. Limited to 50 numbered copies

Death metal has always been a harbor for metal’s darkest, most nihilistic expressions, often invoking sensations of dread and unease to manifest its art. Over the last few years however, the importance of stirring such feelings for many bands (both new and established) seems to have taken a backseat to a greater emphasis on speed, technique and shock in an effort to out-brutal one another. Thankfully, Philadelphia’s Abominism never got that memo. Abominism’s self-titled debut belies some seriously bleak death metal that conveys a sense of dread for what humanity has become and where it’s destined to go. Hell, you can practically smell the smoke and ash from the ruins of our doomed civilization whilst wrapped in some of the darkest melodies this side of Immolation’s Unholy Cult like a blanket. Songs like Predation In Times Of Apocalypse and To Live, Dream, And Yet Die As Nothing exude such a sonic contempt for humanity that they practically beg mankind to just return to the primordial ooze already and let the insects take over. Sure, there’s flourishes of hope here and there (most notably in the solo section of Famine Of Hope), but these serve more to allow a brief respite before draping the listener in a cloak of apocalyptic despair once more. With a deft blend of dissonance coupled with black metal atmosphere, Abominism have crafted an essential, thought-provoking death metal record that stands out among its contemporaries.
