Transgressing The Afterlife – The Complete Recordings 1988-2002 – the complete discography of Abramelin (founded under the moniker Acheron), Australia’s greatest death metal band who forged a captivating sound somewhere between European Groove and US brutality. This extensive three-disc collection pulls together both studio albums, the infamous “Transgression From Acheron” EP, all tracks of the band’s demos and EP as well as three previously unreleased studio/rehearsal songs and seven high quality live tracks + includes 15 previously unreleased tracks. Besides the almost 4 hours of playing time we also have an extensive booklet incl. rare photos, artwork, old flyers and an in-depth interview with the bands main men Simon Dower (vocals) and Tim Aldridge (guitar). Its cool to follow the different phases of this crucial Australian band. From the gore-grind of the early demos (“Necromaniac”, “Cannibal Apocalypse” – tracks straight out of the “Human Abattoir” – with the swarm and swirl of the hey-day of classic 90’s Grind and Death), to the cleaner but no less desperate and bleak 2000 album, “Deadspeak”. The later lyrics make forays into Doom Metal territory too: lot’s of “death as endless dream”, etc. The band had an excellent live reputation – were on bills with the more-or-less grunge-lite bands of the 90’s Triple J audience – and we’re treated to some excellent live recordings (both rehearsal and pub performance) from this time. I must say that anyone interested in this band or in death metal in general need to have this box set
