The White is a collection of songs recorded between 2004 and 2007 and Agalloch has showed us in the past that they can run the gamut from folk-infused black metal to atmospheric post rock. This album leans more toward the latter, but with a very folksy and nature-inspired feel to it. The music is gorgeous and sweeping. Music made of wind, vocals made of frost, lyrics etched in stone and weathered for centuries within a lost cave amid a dark northern forest. There are some samples from the movie Wicker Man (the original) in a few of the songs. The best is the kids chanting ‘we carry death out of the village’ in 5/4 time in the first song. Sets things up nicely. This is probably the most important non-full-length release by Agalloch since Of Stone, Wind, And Pillor, so you just need to get your hands on this.
