ASP is a German Neue Deutsche Härte/Alternative Rock band from Frankfurt am Main formed in 1999. The name is basically identical with the pseudonym of the Band’s leader Asp (Alexander Spreng) and to be pronounced as one word. ASP describe their music as Gothic novel rock, based on the term Gothic novels (a literary genre of the 18th/19th century), not in connection with the Gothic Rock music genre. In 2018, the band embarked on a concert tour that was really something special. For the occasion of the 10th anniversary of their work Zaubererbruder – Der Krabat-Liederzyklus, they presented the complete double album live, in its entirety. In the intervening period, singer and mastermind Asp just couldn’t shake off his interpretation of the Sorbian legend of the apprentice sorcerer Krabat. So he therefore took advantage of the occasion of the anniversary tour to present two additional songs for the Krabat song cycle, which according to him were intended to fill long-perceived gaps in the story. These two new songs, previously only available on the live recording, is now presented here on this single in studio versions. The stirring, euphoric Osternacht represents a stylistic contrast to the sinister, heavy firecracker Geh und heb dein Grab aus, mein Freund. Musically, the two pieces fit perfectly into the poetic maelstrom and musical versatility of the original album. The three musical guests on the tour – Patty Gurdy, Nikos Mavridis and Thomas Zöller – were also invited into the studio, in order to round off the ASP line-up’s heavy rock power with Kantorka’s vocals, violin and flutes. Even after more than ten years, nobody will still be able to escape being cast under the spell of ASP’s version of Krabat. Now it’s time to experience the complete story.
