As with his previous Ayreon”releases, the 2004 offering from the brilliant musical mind of Arjen Anthony Lucassen is both the prototype and benchmark of all modern Rock Operas. The Human Equation is the sixth studio album from Ayreon and it is by far the most grandiose to date. It shall surely prove to be another milestone in the genre. Unlike the previous albums which concern the on-going story of Forever and their quest to find a new home, this is a stand-alone album which follows the period of time spent in a coma following a car-crash. Dream Theater’s James LaBrie takes the lead role as Me, and is supported by an impressive cast from the progressive/symphonic rock fraternity. Guest vocalist includes Mikael Akerfeld (Opeth), Devin Townsend, Devon Graves (Dead Soul Tribe), Eric Clayton (Saviour Machine), Irene Jansen (Star One), Magnus Ekwall (The Quill), Heather Findlay (Mostly Autumn), Mike Baker (Shadow Gallery), Marcela Bovio (Elfonia), Irene Jansen (Karma) and Arjen Lucassen. Want me to name drop some more? How about Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep), Martin Orford (IQ), Joost van den Broek (Sun Caged), Oliver Wakeman and Ed Warby (Gorefest). Arjen goes from strength to strength in this superb creation, which may be the best of the absolute best. You can’t go wrong choosing anything from the man who is arguably the greatest prog composer ever and in my humble opinion, you should not hesitate one little bit to purchase this album. You will be forever delighted that you did.
