Bootleg is the second album by UK parody heavy metal group Bad News. The all star line up of comedy legends featured the late Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Peter Richardson who also directed the show. The band was originally created for the massivley popular Channel 4 comedy series Comic strip presents. Bootleg is a comedy album, apparently a bootleg of outtakes from the sessions for the group’s debut album Bad News. The album however is a bit of a mixed feeling; Locked In is mildly amusing but doesn’t really go anywhere. Aids is an acoustic ballad which lasts all of 12 seconds. Wedding is perhaps the worst of all. The premise is that it’s a recording of a best mans speech at which the band are in attendance. Edmondson appears to do most of the speaking, but apparently not in the character of Vim which is strange. The whole segment seems to be part of a big in-joke amongst the Comic Strip team, which is just simply bemusing for the outsider, and it goes on for a good 4 or 5 minutes. Really pointless and should have been left on the cutting room floor. Heavy Metal Farmer (Drink till I die with different lyrics!) is fantastic as are the Masturbike sessions. Cashing in on Christmas (Dub) is a great laugh too.
