Description

Original 1989 English press with patch

The gothic pop band Balaam And The Angel were formed in Birmingham, England in 1984 by the Scottish-born Morris brothers — vocalist/bassist Mark, drummer Des, and guitarist Jim. The siblings found themselves affiliated with the goth rock movement after a series of opening dates for The Cult. After some private releases the band got some attention of Virgin Records but when their third album for the label, 1989’s Days Of Madness, failed commercially, Virgin opted to cut their losses and dropped the band from their contract and the band cut their name to just Balaam. When the single I Took A Little, from the album Days Of Madness, was released it was at the waning days of pop-metal’s dominance on the charts. Steve Brown, who had produced the Cult, produced the single and oddly enough it resemble The Cult, but more so Electric, which was produced by Rick Rubin and not Brown. Despite the slight gothic vibe, the band never truly seems committed. Instead, they seem to want to retain commercial viability. This isn’t a bad release but it lacks the personality like Ian Astbury or Billy Duffy.
