If Moby took drugs rather than meditating he might sound more like Norway’s Beyond Dawn. There’s the same understated singing and use of beats, but Oslo’s finest offer an altogether stranger brew; maybe it is something in the water. They bill themselves as Norwegian lounge-core kings, though I will admit ignorance when asked exactly how much competition there is. Beyond Dawn offer an intriguing listen and if sometimes they sacrifice strong song structure in favour of experimentation you’ve got to applaud them for attempting something different. While the mournful sophistication and lyrical subtleties remain, what is introduced is a decidedly electronic sound which no doubt causes purists to cringe and progressives to rejoice simultaneously. Frysh may very well be Beyond Dawn’s most accessible work so far, and yet it gives little interest toward producing singles for airplay. Consequently, what we have here is a deeply refreshing body of work which captivates the listener with snippets of pinch harmonics strewn about the tracks while still ultimately functioning as a true album in the traditional sense. With a display of such resolute artistic integrity, an album like this is a rarity in the new millennium to be sure. Leftfield, electro and synth-pop lovers check this out
