Description

To coincide with Black Sabbath’s supposed final reunion tour in mid- to late 1999, a two-hour home video, The Last Supper, was issued. It features 13 tracks filmed during their U.S. tour from earlier in the year, and includes interviews with all four bandmembers (both separately and as a group). Despite the fact that the line-up didn’t regularly play together for nearly 20 years, the performances on The Last Supper show that age had not diminished the powerful and inspired performances that they gave on the reunion tour. All of Sabbath’s expected standards are present (War Pigs, N.I.B., Sweet Leaf, Black Sabbath, Iron Man, Children of the Grave, Paranoid), as well as several forgotten classics (Electric Funeral, Into the Void, After Forever, etc.). The interviews prove to be very insightful, including guitarist Tony Iommi’s explanation of an accident he suffered in the 60s that nearly ended his musical career, and discussion on how the band formed out of a group known as Rare Breed, among other topics. Criticisms are few, but one is that the set follows a trend that seems commonplace with other music home videos in the 1990s — few of the songs are featured in their entirety (most are intercut with the interviews). Another fault is that during the track Dirty Women, footage of female fans exposing themselves is the primary focus instead of the band’s performance. Still, a highly recommended video for fans of this legendary band.
