Forming in the small German town of Krefeld, the young bards-to-be members Hansi Kursch (vocals, bass), Marcus Siepen (guitar), André Olbrich (guitar), and Thomen Stauch (drums) initially called themselves Lucifer’s Heritage. The band soon got into problems with their name. Black metal and Satan worshipping were just two things. So when the second demo started to achieve notice from metal press and fans the band decided to change name to Blind Guardian and soon afterwards they were signed and found themselves in the studio to record their debut album Battalions Of Fear, the same title as Lucifers Heritage’s second demo. Their first demo, Symphonies Of Doom, shows lots of potential but it also has its flaws. Only the opening track, Halloween, would make it onto a Guardian full-length, albeit with a different title. Their second demo, Battalions Of Fear, shows what an amazing progress the band has done in very short time. Everything here is splendid if you like early Blind Guardian. This is in par with their debut album and some early fans even say that these early versions is better. Well most would disagree but its still stunning and Hansi pulls off some phenomenal screeches. The best track on here, Majesty, deals with the Lord Of The Rings character Frodo. Its fast-paced speed metal perfection with some overproduced and loud bass. 4 of the 5 tracks on this demo made it onto Blind Guardians debut album. This rare and hard to find album features both Lucifer Heritage demos as well as 7 none album tracks with Blind Guardian taken from singles and compilation albums. Fans of Blind Guardians earlier releases must check this out, you will not be disappointed.
