Bo Hansson was a Swedish multi instrumentalist who first came to prominence in the mid/late 1960s with the organ and drums duo Hansson & Karlsson gaining some notoriety for jamming with Jimi Hendrix. He also played with the bands Fläsket Brinner and Kebnekajse, although he never joined either. In fact members of those bands featured on his 1970s quadrilogy of instrumental fantasy prog rock albums. He is most famous for the influential and much touted debut album Lord Of The Rings aka Sagan Om Ringen. On his thrid album Mellanväsen (aka Attic Thoughts) he included a track based on the book Watership Down. Bo Hansson then made an entire album based on that book. The album was called Watership Down in Usa and El-Ahrairah in Sweden. The music here is an interesting mix of the mildly funk influenced symphonic jams of Attic Thoughts or Magician’s Hat with the mystical approach of Lord of the Rings, and for my money it’s Hansson’s most accomplished and cohesive work since his debut, the concept apparently helping to focus his efforts. Apparently this would be Bo’s last full-on prog album – the mid-1980s comeback album Mitt I Livet being a very different affair from his earlier albums. Well the best part of this album is the analog equipment used at that time. This is a full band with guitars, bass, drums, winds and lots of mellotron and moog keyboards. The music is a prog fusion delight with lots of themes and hooks that will keep you on the loop. A real gem in your prog collection.
