Boris Podsoblyayev, more known as Kaldrad, was once one of the most prolific artists in the Russian black metal community, releasing a massive slew of albums through Branikald, Forest, Nitberg, Temnozor, Vargleide, and others. He was also a key member of the Blazebirth Hall black metal circle. His musical work was probably at the peak in 2001 when he was put in jail. Of all his work, Branikald is one that stands out for its raw black metal. The second demo To Kampf, released in 1995, kicks off with an eerie piano piece. The piano is out of turne and when it gets mixed with the very distant sounding vocals then you really heave an eerie opening. When the demo continues you realize that the it wasnt just the vocals that sounded that far away. Now the everything sounds miles away and it’s impossible to know which instruments are used at the time. But that strange production gives the demo a unique sound maybe it even was something Kaldrad was aiming for. It alls blends into one droning atmosphere of darkness, coldness, and solitude. So this is definitely not for everyone but if youre looking for something that sounds very chaotic and cold with an evil sounding clean singing then this is for you. Unfortunately Kaldrad never released anything more with Branikald after he was released from prison and before getting killed by a car. But Branikald is a good legacy fo this extreme man.
