James Byrd was the original guitarist for 80s metal group Fifth Angel. Back then, James’ delivery was a straight-ahead power chord style. Then came James Byrds Atlantis Rising with one album before James Byrd shortened his solo project to just ‘Byrd’ with ‘Anthem’ being the second album. With a title like that you would expect something epic, something anthemic, but instead we get a kind of melodic metal and neo symphonic metal with guitar-wizardry tendencies, I would guess that the gentlemen Blackmore and Malmstein are not completely unknown to master Byrd. If youre into music that has a great guitar in the midst of fabulously well-written symphonic metal then this is for you. With Michael Flatters on vocals and Brian Hutchison on piano, drums and bass this trio rides a beautiful storm of powerful, emotional music.
