The French band Cachot d’Effroi lives up to its name. Rarely has music so thoroughly oozed darkness from every pore and evoked such a profound sense of confinement. Their second album Dans Le Cimetiere Abandonne is black metal that reeks of cemeteries, abandoned buildings, and nocturnal strolls through unsettling forests. Playing on sizzling, haunting guitars, Cachot d Effroi also makes ample use of keyboards, which, while perhaps more vibrant, also contribute their share of gloomy atmospheres. The vocals remain as sinister as ever, and if a few bursts of energy appear here and there, it’s always only to better return to these somber, dungeon-like atmospheres. An uncompromising album, majestically draped in the trappings of black metal in all that this music can have of sinister.
