Its very interesting to hear how Caliban has rolled with some of the minor changes that metalcore has had over the years. Back in 2001 with their album Vent, they pretty much sounded like all other metalcore bands active at the time. now 13 years later they have evolved and grown and since the metalcore has evolved too they still seem to sound very much like the current scene. This might sound negative but its quite the opposite. “Ghost Empire” is the epitome of what a metalcore album should sound like; bold, aggressive, melodic, tempo and style changes galore. The album takes another twist as vocalist Andy Dorner evolves into a true singer and finds his voice in song to go along with those primal screams. “Chaos” is a prime example of just how far the band can take one song and twist its face off and put it back again backwards while Andy puts his full arsenal on display in this anthem-like metal song. The guitar work takes some wild runs and adds some intense effects such as the beginning of “Nebel” and this song really had me reminiscing about some of Killswitch Engage’s recent work. “Devils Night” almost has a symphonic start of that makes you wonder what happened here for just a second and then the guitars and full weaponry of the musicianship punch you right in the mouth. Yet this song also has those Killswitch Engage elements in tempo change and that melodic-twist that allows you to take a breath of air before they rip right back into your soul. Another thing i love about Ghost Empire is the atmospheres that each of the tracks contain. There’s a healthy amount of synthetic textures making the space of each song feel so vast and spacious. And there’s also plenty of layered guitar melodies during choruses and other passages to complicate the textures a little more. This isn’t anything new to metalcore or to Caliban, but it’s still done very well. Overall, Ghost Empire, is a great statement of the band and should gain them a couple of new fans along the way.
