The Dutch masters of horror, Carach Angren, takes you to the hell of war with their incredible 2012 album Where The Corpses Sink Forever. The trio’s dark, black metal-base sound is bombastic, theatrical and perfectly portrays the groups the cinematic horror concepts. First and foremost, Where The Corpses Sink Forever is a thematic album as is their first two full-length albums (both excellent). The album opens with An Ominous Recording, an anonymous WW2 era combatant confessing to having to execute 7 prisoners via gunshots to the head. Instead of the executions, something supernatural (Carach Angren’s schtick if you will) happens, and instead the would-be executioner is haunted/tortured by each of the unlucky seven’s tragic life stories. Sound unusual? It is. It’s also a refreshing theme for a black metal band. What follows is 7 tracks summarizing said tragic stories, and an 8th track where the executioner goes mad being the host of 7 stories of such sorrow and madness. The stories are all intense, and the music is unrelenting and equally intense. Themes aside, the music is just great. The vocals are more often than not understood despite being typical black metal shrieks. The keyboards are unique and eerie, and each song has atmosphere that perfectly suits the subject matter. Overall a dark and disturbing album worth checking out if youre into symphonic black metal.
