Description

All the way from the Netherlands, The Charm The Fury unleash their ferocious brand of metal upon the world with their full-length debut, A Shade Of My Former Self. While the high level of talent and musicianship of the gentlemen on guitars, bass and drums is readily apparent on the record, it is vocalist Caroline Westendorp, who catches the unsuspecting listener completely off-guard. There are a growing number of female frontwomen in the metal scene these days, and often female-fronted bands can feel like a gimmick meant to cater to what is arguably a testosterone-dominated audience. This is not the case with The Charm The Fury, nor is it the case with Westendorp, whose guttural screams had me convinced that some other member of the band was assisting her in vocal duties. I found—to my surprise—that aside from two tracks on the record featuring guest vocalists, Daniël de Jongh, of Textures, and Jamie Graham, of Heart Of A, it is Caroline Westendorp alone, oscillating from primal, hair-raising guttural vocals that call to mind such great female vocalists as Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy) and Alissa White-Gluz (The Agonist), to beautiful melodic singing. Her vocal prowess is accompanied by impressive riffage that ranges from frenetic and chaotic to soaring harmonies, in tracks peppered tastefully with occasional devastating breakdowns, and even gang vocals. This all comes together to form an impressive debut that remains interesting from start to finish and avoids sounding formulaic.
