One of the world’s most iconic metal bands, Cirith Ungol, played a legendary one-night-only show at the Sunset Strip’s Roxy Theatre in 2024 to celebrate the release of their 2023 album Dark Parade. The band performed the album in full, along with classics like Join the Legion, Frost And Fire, Black Machine and Atom Smasher. The result: a powerful live album. Drummer and co-founder Rob Garven reflected, I think we’re playing better now than back in the King of the Dead days. With in-ear monitors onstage, I’ve teared up hearing how true the music sounds to our old recordings. The Roxy was a natural choice for the recording—Cirith Ungol had played there before in 1983 alongside bands from Metal Massacre 1. Garven notes the venue’s legacy: It’s owned by Lou Adler, next to the Rainbow Bar And Grill. Every time we play a club like this, it’s special. Garven compares Live At The Roxy to legendary concert albums like Live At Leeds by The Who and Uriah Heep Live (1993): It’s hard to capture a concert’s energy, but I think we did it.
