One of the pioneers of Brutal Death Metals have returned with the second instalment of the trilogy named The Book Of Suffering and are not taking any prisoners. Formed back in 1992, the Canadians were integral to the creation of the extreme version of Death Metal we now enjoy so much of and are still far more brutally brilliant than most. Its been 3 years since the release of Part 1 of this trilogy and this time has allowed the four-piece to create something delightfully despicable. The 4-track release kicks off with ‘The Wretched Living’ which welcomes listeners, old and new to the uniquely high quality, intense and skull smashing band that are Cryptopsy. The punishing drums, chaotically organised fret work, speedy bass and guttural vocal, which unlike many still carries differing tones and emotions, set the band apart and this is a welcome return or sharp learning curve depending on your knowledge of the band. The unrelenting punishment is something very special and we are only one track in. Overall this is an 18-minute master piece of Brutal Death Metal that easily displays why this band have remained at the forefront of the scene. Whilst they have been around for some years and have a significant back catalogue, their relevance and importance is as high as ever. The tightness, quality and extreme levels that this band creates is something special to experience and at this rate they will continue to be one of the most important brutal bands for many years to come.
