Description

Double album on blue splatter vinyls with gatefold cover

For their eight effort, the post-metal pioneers join forces with the talented Julie Christmas from Brooklyn, bringing an even larger depth to Cult Of Lunas sound. Her haunting voice has fronted vital bands such as Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice, and is one of significance in the underground sludge and post-metal scene. Furthermore, she has released two solo albums and features on tracks by bands like Mouth of the Architect and String of Consciousness. Her prowess as a vocalist is powerfully on display on Mariner. Since their beginnings in 1998, Cult Of Luna has released seven albums, been awarded the top rock/metal award at the Swedish National Radio Awards and cemented their status as one of the true progressors of the metal genre, known to most metal aficionados. In 2013, the Swedes released their most successful work to date in the shape of Vertikal I and Vertikal II. These cohesive pieces of work received worldwide appraisal and only pillared Cult Of Luna to even greater heights. Theres plenty to like about the Mariner album, and there is a familiar, yet tangibly maturing and shifting core of Cult Of Luna, much a continuation of the Vertikal album(s), and evidence both of the band’s new members and of their ever-improving songwriting and mastering. Julie’s contribution varies from a bright, harmonic supporting contrast to the throatier vocals (Johannes and / or Fredrik) on A Greater Call to more direct and leading vocal presence on Chevron, to the controlled chaos of her most intense vocals in The Wreck of S.S. Needle. I won’t get into detail about each song, but as a whole, I’m generally impressed and happy to add this release to my collection.

Track list:
1. A Greater Call
2. Chevron
3. The Wreck of S.S. Needle
4. Approaching Transition
5. Cygnus
6. Beyond The Redshift
