January 1985 was a big month for American fans of Deep Purple. This was the first time the band would come to American shores to play live since 1976. It was a long tour, it hit big venus and it largely went down a storm with the crowds. It was also on the US tour that the band started to rediscover their sense of fun and improvisation started to develop as the mood took them. Nothing as lengthy perhaps as back in the 70s, but spur of the moment jams on new riffs, and old ones. Between songs Gillan’s stream of conciousness introductions begin to take on a life of their own too. The shows ran between 90 and 110 minutes depending on how things were going. Needless to say the extra twenty minutes usually resulted from everyone enjoying themselves. This double album was recorded at the Providence Civic Center on March 5th 1985. Gillan’s voice was in shreds at that particular gig. Gillan was having a few rough nights, the strain of such a tour telling on his voice while Ritchie would play with indifference one night, and then let rip the next. The other three members however were always reliable and playing their socks off each and every show. The set opened with some prerecorded organ music, and then a modern version of Highway Star. Perfect Strangers was supported by a fantastic set of laser effects, including the group being enclosed in a green cage of lasers. Child In Time was pretty good, except that they had too much reverb on the vocals. The projection screen got a work-out, with a version of the In Rock cover. The clouds in the background were rotating past the mountains, providing a rather calming background against the rampant surging of the song. For a finale we got a fantastic rendition of Speed King, and a properly climatic guitar sacrifice, high atop one of the large cubes to the side of the stage. The band then ended with Smoke On The Water
