Rejoice! For Def-Con-One is metal! No compromise, fist in your face, snarling, spitting metal! Sounding every bit like a Southern US beast in the vein of Pantera, Def-Con-One actually hails from Newcastle England, with Warface appearing to be the band’s second sense mashing assault. Dirty great riffs tear out of the speakers with blood spattering force and all the subtlety of a baseball bat meeting your head at great pace. The vocals slash and stab, while the positively pummelling drums – courtesy of one-time Venom and M-pire Of Evil stick shredder Antton Lant (yes Cronos little brother), knock you off your feet, before continuing the attack, turning your ears to a bloody pulp. Restrained Warface is not. Bone crushingly brutal, child scaring threatening and neighbour frighteningly anti-social, it sure is. More importantly, it is also completely convincing and mightily impressive. Add to that a production that merely heightens the already barbarous onslaught and this really is an album utterly brimming with vicious intent. “Stepped In Pain”, “Never Look Back” and “Give Me Strength” stomp with such force as to bring your house down, but the fact that underpinning the whole thing are grooves so gargantuan that they’d flatten an entire herd of elephants, makes for an album to not only make your friends cower, but to also cause them to convulse in time to the assault. Driving the point home is the mighty, triumphant “10 Bullets”, while the excellent acoustic “Feeling Cold” only serves to heighten the intensity of the songs that surround it. The real stars of this seductively sickening show are vocalist Davey Meikle and guitarist Johnny Hunter, who between them serve up song after song of sense suffering brutality. However without Antton’s deafening drumming and the bass bashing of Steve Miller, the effect would be halved. Heed the Def-Con-One warning. This is a band capable of mass destruction on an epic scale. Shave your head, break out the big guns, prepare for the riffs from hell and put on your Warface!
