This Finnish band resides in the darker outskirts of Scandinavian death metal. Like many death metal bands in the early ’90s, Demigod released a few noisy demos of thrashier material before coming into their own on their debut full-length. Although not as well-recognized as some of their Swedish contemporaries, Demigod are equally deserving of the acclaim afforded to the more well-known bands from their scene. Tremolo-picked parts are melodic in a way similar to Entombed, Unleashed, Dismember, et al., but a murkiness resembling Incantation is also present. It would however take another 10 years for the band to release their second album, Shadow Mechanics, in 2002. The album fires in pure Scandinavian death metal tradition with the downright impressive My Blood, Your Blood, Shadow Mechanics rapidly takes to a far less predictable orientation; straying from the old school death metal aggression reminiscent of their vintage first release, further excerpts from the album witness Demigod venture down more melodic, brooding and doom-laden pathways — not unsimilar in style to Edge of Sanity’s slower, numbers –, alas with only mitigated success. Whereas this seven-Finn act’s potent, driving low-case heavy death metal material indeed proves to dispense pure surges of death metal-laced adrenaline their more solemn, tentatively moody songs sadly miss their mark. Shadow Mechanics is fortunately enough punctuated with a number of full-fledged scorchers such as the blasting Gates Of Lamentation midway through the album, but is mostly articulated around massively heavy mid-tempo numbers. A few more tracks akin to their debut album would have lifted this up more because when their at their best they deliver some angered, low-cased and pure death metal that are so pleasant to hear.
