Ex-Mercyful Fate guitarists Michael Denner and Hank shermann have been involved, individually or collectively, in a myriad of projects over the years (Force of Evil, Demonica, Shermann Tank etc.) and none have successfully conjured the dark magic of Mercyful Fate. Satan’s Tomb definitely comes the closest, and for that alone I consider it a big success. The riffs have that traditional metal feel with a dark, sinister edge and are reminiscent, if not quite as classic, as old Mercyful Fate. Sean Peck of the metal band Cage handles the vocals and his Ripper Owens-like style fits the music and atmosphere of the material perfectly. On the downside, the songs make you wish for a new Mercyful Fate album, complete with King Diamond and Timi Hansen joining the fray. From all accounts, that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. In the meantime, let’s enjoy Satan’s Tomb and hope it sells well enough to convince everyone involved that a follow-up, full length album would be well worth the time and effort.
