Devastator has released many albums, a lot many to critical acclaim because that band is playing a style of music thats hard to dislike – Thrash Metal with leanings to early Black Metal, of the kind that can be compared to the first two albums-era Slayer, Venom and the likes. Thats like staple food man, thats like rice for the Asians. If you dont like it then youre an outcast instantly. Youre an immigrant. Nocturnal Slut is the sixth album already by Devastator, the blackened thrash metal group from Florida. Its too late for the band to change its style and something tells me that the band wont listen to me, so I wont even try. Its apparently very, very comfortable playing in this style and thats the best part about this band. Its not trying hard – its just playing what comes out naturally, thats vital. The music is analog-wannabe and thats a good thing here. Its not as rabid as say Mantak nor as polished or as focused as its European counterparts, but maybe it doesnt want to be like that. It remains under the gigantic shadow of the aforementioned bands, and while those bands peaked long ago, Devastator peaks every time. Like I said, Nocturnal Slut has little to dislike except for the lack of originality or extremity, for the sake of an argument. Yes, its extreme metal no doubt, but this style has obviously evolved to interpret the essence in bestial forms, so to speak, but Devastators brand of Black/Thrash is potent as it is and is making quite an impression just like this – besides, trying too hard sucks. Its like an immigrant trying to blend in. We dont want that now, do we? Us narrow-minded, old school-loving assholes.
