This accompanying video to Dire Straits’ live album (also named On The Night) has a nice opening sequence where the band and roadies arrive at the venue, and get ready to put on the show. The dvd uses this sequence to introduce the players, showing them getting off of busses, walking down corridors, and other mundane predatory actions. Knopfler walks out to a very enthusiastic crowd and after a few seconds of thunderous applause launches into the first song. The music, the audio quality, the cinematography, and the production values are superb. Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits were on the band’s final tour, and the group was honed to perfection on every level. The two recording used for this dvd were done in France on the 21st of May and in Holland on the 29th of May. The musicians, song selection and ambiance combine to make a fantastic whole. Knopfler is shown at the very top of his superb best – by turns tasty, dynamic, driving, understated, but always with the audience totally captivated. Other musicians include Alan Clarke, Phil Palmer, Guy Fletcher, and pedal steel guitar wizard Paul Franklin. All give stellar performances, with Knopfler highlighting everyone’s talents and at the same time leading hot and tight. Knopfler’s guitar style had evolved from Alchemy (1984) with a “less is better than more” subtlety, matured in both technique and musicality. The song selection is brilliant, alternating between hard-driving rock and introspective ballad. Once again, Mark Knopfler and company stretch out most of these songs by adding overly lengthy guitar solos. Something that probably is welcomed to Dire Straits early fans
