The stylistic description “melodic death metal” may sound like an oxymoron to some, but death metal connoisseurs know the variations of their genre, and Disarmonia Mundi remains a favourite among those who prefer strong melodies amid their brutal thrash. Disarmonia Mundi is largely the brainchild of Swedish multi-instrumentalist Bjorn “Speed” Strid (who is also known for his achievements with Soilwork). Strid sings, drums, and plays all the guitar parts on Mind Tricks, creating dense, sophisticated soundscapes that incorporate elements of progressive and ambient metal while never sacrificing the sledgehammer riffs and blistering rhythms associated with the genre. The layers of sound make good on the album’s title, and ensure a unique listening experience for anyone interested in the style.
