Italy’s Disarmonia Mundi is a progressive melodic death metal act that got their attention when Bjorn Speed Strid from Soilwork got involved in the band in time for the second album Fragments Of D-Generation in 2004. This album is a re-release of their 2002 debut album titled Nebularium, supplemented by their EP Restless Memoirs. For those whose knowledge of the band is exclusively based upon their later releases it would be worth mentioning that the Disarmonia Mundi we know nowadays can be noticed here only in traces. The pace is much slower, the average length of the songs being considerably above five minutes, and those immediately memorable, smashing choruses we got used to on the newer albums are not there yet. The style is not really the later modern melodic death metal but rather the ‘90s bare melodeath, with many other influences – there is also some doom and thrash, prog rock and even blues. The overall image is pleasant and interesting, if somewhat half-baked, music. In spite of not being obviously similar to anything else, it still doesn’t feel very characteristic or unique. The Restless Memoirs EP features songs recorded between 1999 and 2006 and on the newer tracks we all the trademarks of recent death metal tough verse, hit-like chorus, simple, quickly memorable synth melody. Nebularium is worth a re-release, but the Restless Memoirs EP makes me ambivalent. There are good tracks on it, but it’s no accident they haven’t made it onto the last two albums.
