Basically, Disciples Of Mockery is the Force Of Evil to Onward To Golgotha era Incantation. Just as Force Of Evil is pretty much all of Mercyful Fate minus front man King Diamond and plus some guy from a less than well-known band, so are the ranks of the Disciples populated with John McEntee’s early 90s backing band and the guitarist from a band called Rotting Corpse. As one would expect, this record sounds a lot like Onward To Golgotha, which is a good thing, seeing as Onward to Golgotha was always Incantation’s best (though Mortal Throne Of Nazarene and particularly Diabolical Conquest are both classics in their own right). It’s definitely a bit more modern-sounding than the godliness that is Golgotha, but then again, there’s like an eight year gap between the two records. The sound is a bit dry compared to the thick, wet, and sludge-ridden production of Golgotha, but it’s still very sludgy and dark when you put it up against your average death metal band’s sound. This is a very good thing, seeing as this record is actually a bit slower than its spiritual predecessor. This record is definitely one of the more fucked up death metal albums ever released, and it’s a damn shame that Disciples Of Mockery disappeared, though half of the band members are now touring with Incantation. Who knows, maybe they’ll put out another album like this.
