Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In America is a masterpiece when it comes to cinematic arts. But it wouldn’t be half as emotional and haunting without this remarkable soundtrack to accompany it. The musical score was composed by Leone’s longtime collaborator Ennio Morricone and Morricone really has come up with the perfect score to set the mood and give you the message. The melodies weave a fabric that guides the viewer through the poverty, crime, love and betrayal of America’s growing years. From start to finish it just draws you in and dosen’t let go. Every song is a work of art. The haunting title song, Deborah’s Theme, was written for another film in the 1970s but was rejected. The score is also notable for Morricone’s incorporation of the music of Gheorghe Zamfir, who plays a pan flute. Zamfir’s flute music was used to similar effect in Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). Morricone also collaborated with vocalist Edda Dell’Orso on the score. From start to finish it just draws you in and dosen’t let go and it won the LA Film Critics Award and BAFTA Film Award in 1984 and it was also nominated for Golden Globe Award.
