Evol, named after the black principle of existence and founded in Padova, Italy in 1993 by vocalist and keyboard player Prince Of Agony (Giordano Bruno). The band is heavily influenced by Italian horror movies soundtracks from the 70s and they managed to create an awesome mix between orchestral keyboard based pieces and fierce black metal songs. After two demos the band signed to the Adipocere label for the 1995 debut album ‘The Saga Of The Horned King’. The album is a mix of symphonic parts, black/thrash metal parts and fantasy melodies, sometimes epic, others are very gloomy. The black metal parts are not fast, their very slow but extremely evocative and strange while the screams are quite extreme and raw. The end result is an album that won’t appeal to everyone. If you are fan of the Italian maestros Goblin and adore the soundtracks to ‘Phenomena’ or ‘Susperia’ then you might like this, others will probably see this as boring keyboard songs and some might dislike the Italian accent. But whatever you think, the spirit and honesty is still there. If you want pure black metal then Evol is not for you even if the black metal parts became faster and more extreme on their later releases while still keeping those dreamlike atmospheric keyboard parts.
