Founded in 1981 Flotsam And Jetsam was to rise above the thrash melee with a strong debut album Doomsday For The Deceiver. In spite of this strong start, unfortunately the band are known in many media circles more for being the source of Metallicas Jason Newsted and despite major label back up have struggled to rid themselves of that stigma. Nevertheless, the band would stick to their guns releasing a string of commendable metal albums and put in punishing tour schedules that never betrayed a sniff of compromise. At this time they were back home at Metal Blade, which is probably where they should have stayed, and in January 1999 the band released their seventh album, the James Lockyer co-produced Unnatural Selection. The production here is a little hollow compared to past work, where the guitars always dominated, but that not withstanding, the sound is consistent to what the bands been known for, heavy, aggressive, and a twisted vision of the world as they see it. The music is a return to their more thrash roots and are written from a personal perspective, its vintage Flotsam & Jetsam lyrical inscriptions through and through. Flots offers a good album and metal fans cant go wrong with this or any other Flotsam And Jetsam record because they havent stuck around all this time because someone feels sorry for them.
